A man died and another was injured in a shooting in north Austin early Sunday morning, police confirmed. The incident occurred near the Gus Garcia Recreation Center at 1201 East Rundberg Lane around 12:30 a.m., according to Austin Police Department Officer Jeremy Fisher.

Officers arriving at the scene discovered a man in his 30s suffering from traumatic injuries. Despite attempts at life-saving intervention, he was pronounced dead at the scene, Fisher stated. A second victim was also located nearby and transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

As of Sunday morning, investigators reported having limited information regarding potential suspects. Fisher indicated that the incident appeared to be isolated, and authorities believe there is no immediate threat to the wider public. The death represents the ninth homicide investigated by the Austin Police Department in 2026.

The investigation remains in its preliminary stages, and the area surrounding the Gus Garcia Recreation Center was expected to remain an active police scene for an extended period. Officers are currently conducting interviews with individuals who reported the disturbance to authorities.

Austin police are requesting that anyone with information related to the shooting contact the APD homicide tip line at 512-477-3588 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477.

This incident comes less than 24 hours after Austin police investigated another homicide in South Austin, bringing the total number of homicides investigated this year to two within a short timeframe, according to reports.

Separately, Austin police officers were involved in a rescue operation, saving eight kittens that had been left exposed to cold weather, according to a separate police report.
