Christian Cowan presented his Fall/Winter 2026/2027 collection, titled “Before the Door Opens,” in New York City on February 13th, shifting his design focus from public spaces to the intimacy of the interior.
The collection, a “cinematic meditation on transformation, intimacy, and spectacle,” according to the designer, explores the ritual of dressing as a performance of vulnerability. Cowan reimagined garments historically intended for privacy – foundation pieces, corsets, and slips – bringing them into the spotlight. Original 1950s textiles, antique lace trims, and traditional corsetry techniques were central to the collection’s construction.
Bullet bras and waist cinchers, traditionally structural underpinnings, were elevated to become protagonists within the designs. Backless silk gowns reminiscent of the 1920s were juxtaposed with sculptural mid-century underpinnings, while crisp tailoring softened under exaggerated fur and crystal embellishments. The collection challenged conventional gender roles with men appearing in corsets, questioning the ownership of restriction and adornment.
Torn slips were reconstructed over nude illusion fabrics, and crystal gowns offered a deliberate tension between revealing the body and maintaining control. Two bespoke handbags created by BSWANKY were featured on the runway, emphasizing the connection between intimacy and craftsmanship.
The presentation followed Cowan’s Fall Winter 2025-2026 collection, “Sink Your Teeth Into,” which was described as a “sugar rush” and a “jaw-dropping, tongue-in-cheek spectacle.”
Recent New York Fashion Week activity likewise included presentations from Michael Kors Collection, Calvin Klein Collection, Public School, Monse, and Carolina Herrera, as reported by WWD.
