Hollywood honored Italian actor Franco Nero with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday, February 12th, recognizing a career spanning over six decades and more than 200 films. Nero, 84, is the 18th Italian artist to receive the honor, a fact he noted during the ceremony.
The star, located in front of The Montalban Theatre at 1611 Vine Street, is in the category of Motion Pictures, according to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “His star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame celebrates a career that has inspired audiences across generations and around the world,” said Ana Martinez, producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Nero’s career began in the 1960s, achieving international recognition in 1966 with his role in Sergio Corbucci’s Django, a seminal spaghetti western. The film’s influence extended decades later, inspiring Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, in which Nero appeared in a cameo role. He has collaborated with a range of prominent directors including Luis Buñuel, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and John Huston.
The ceremony coincided with the eleventh edition of the Filming Italy – Los Angeles festival, running from February 10th to 14th, which celebrated Nero’s work with retrospective screenings. Nero reflected on his long career, stating, “It means that I have planted many seeds over these more than 60 years of artistic career, even though a sower never has the certainty of harvesting the fruits of his labor.”
Nero has been married to Oscar-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave since December 31, 2006, though their relationship dates back to 1967, when they met on the set of Camelot. The couple, who share a son, Carlo Gabriel Nero, maintain homes in London and Velletri, near Rome. Nero credited Redgrave with instilling a sense of determination that contributed to his career longevity, stating, “Beyond being the woman of my life, she is the most prestigious living actress — Vanessa is determination personified.”
Beyond acting, Nero has also worked as a director, screenwriter, and producer. He recently discussed the possibility of revisiting his iconic role as Django, according to reports.
