Garmin has released software update 16.28 for its Forerunner series of running watches, introducing a range of new features and improvements. The update, now available for the Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970, includes enhancements to battery life monitoring, new training plans, and bug fixes, according to a report from Tech-140226-616.
Among the new features is a “glance” function providing at-a-glance information regarding battery performance. Users also gain access to new training plans focused on timed workouts, cardio, and strength training. Four new glance options have been added, including weight tracking and a battery life overview. Sleep insights have also been refined, displaying recommended sleep and wake times.
The update allows users to temporarily pause smart notifications after completing activities, a feature accessible through the activity’s menu. Several bugs related to indoor cycling, music functionality, and data uploading via Wi-Fi have been addressed.
Currently, the 16.28 update is available to 50% of Forerunner 570 and 970 users, with a full rollout planned for the near future. Users can download the update through the system menu of their devices.
The Forerunner 970, released in May 2025, replaced the Forerunner 965 model, while the Forerunner 570 succeeded the Forerunner 265, according to reporting from puhelinvertailu.com. The release marked a shift in Garmin’s naming convention, establishing the 500 series as a mid-range option between the budget-friendly 165 and the high-end 900 series. The Forerunner 970 features an updated Garmin Elevate gen 5 sensor, replacing the gen 4 sensor in the 965, and includes EKG and skin temperature measurement capabilities. It also incorporates a flashlight, a feature previously found in the Fenix and Epix series. The 970 weighs 56 grams, slightly heavier than the 965’s 53 grams, and includes a microphone and speaker with support for voice commands.
Software updates to the Forerunner 970 also include an evening summary, ovulation tracking estimates, and 15 new supported sports, alongside a user interface update mirroring the Fenix 8. The Forerunner 970 is priced at €785 in Finland, a price increase compared to the Forerunner 965, with prices ranging from €645 at RunningXpert.com to €719 at Hobby Hall as of February 13, 2026.
The Forerunner 570 and 970 were designed for runners and triathletes, offering advanced training features, recovery assistance, and personalized workouts, as stated by Garmin in a press release reported by wareable.com and garmin.com.
