Claude Free Tier: New Features Challenge ChatGPT – Files, Skills & Connectors Added

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Anthropic, the artificial intelligence safety and research company, is expanding the capabilities of its Claude chatbot, offering features previously reserved for paid subscribers to free users. The move comes as a direct response to OpenAI’s recent decision to introduce advertisements into the free version of its ChatGPT chatbot, a strategy Anthropic has publicly rejected.

Starting today, users of the free Claude service can create, edit, and function with files directly within the chatbot interface. Supported file types include Microsoft Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and PDF files, utilizing the Sonnet 4.5 model. Previously, this functionality was limited to Claude Pro subscribers, who have access to the more powerful Opus model.

Beyond file creation, Anthropic is also extending access to “Connectors” and “Skills” to free users. Connectors allow Claude to integrate with a wide range of third-party services, including Slack, Asana, Zapier, Stripe, Canva, Notion, Figma, and WordPress. These integrations enable users to automate workflows and connect Claude to their existing tools. Skills, described as repeatable, filesystem-based resources, provide Claude with domain-specific expertise, with pre-built options for PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and PDF manipulation, as well as the ability for users to create custom skills tailored to their organizational needs.

The upgrade also includes improvements to the conversational experience for free users. Anthropic has implemented “compaction,” a feature that automatically summarizes earlier context within a conversation, allowing for longer and more sustained interactions without requiring users to re-establish the initial premise. While the free tier usage cap remains unchanged, the addition of compaction aims to mitigate limitations by enabling more efficient conversation management.

Anthropic’s decision to bolster its free tier is widely seen as a strategic maneuver to attract users potentially dissatisfied with OpenAI’s advertising-supported model for ChatGPT. Last week, Anthropic publicly committed to keeping Claude ad-free, a promise reinforced by a recent Super Bowl advertisement that subtly criticized OpenAI’s approach. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded to Anthropic’s ad with a post on X (formerly Twitter) stating, “Anthropic’s Super Bowl ad is…cute.”

The expanded free tier features were initially introduced for paid users in September 2025, according to Anthropic. The company’s announcement emphasized a commitment to providing a powerful and versatile AI assistant without relying on advertising revenue.
