A family from County Kildare received €21,000 in damages after being accidentally locked inside a bathroom at Dublin Airport for nearly an hour, according to a ruling delivered by Judge James O’Donohoe on Wednesday. The Nolan family – details of their composition were not immediately available – required assistance from fire and rescue services to be freed after the bathroom door jammed shut.

The incident, which occurred at an unspecified date, prompted a legal claim against airport authorities. The precise circumstances leading to the family becoming trapped were not detailed in court, but the prolonged confinement caused significant distress.

The award of €21,000 reflects the ordeal experienced by the family. The court heard testimony regarding the anxiety and inconvenience caused by the 50-minute detention. Firefighters were ultimately required to force open the bathroom door to facilitate the family’s release.

Elsewhere at Dublin Airport on February 13th, 2026, heartwarming scenes unfolded as RTÉ news anchor Vivienne Traynor surprised her daughter, Holly, and her fiancé, Ronan Prenty, upon their return from a trip to Bali. The couple had been planning to surprise their families with news of their engagement, but were themselves met with a surprise reception orchestrated by Traynor and other family members, including a performance by The Skerries Ukulele Strummers playing Bruno Mars’ “I Think I Want To Marry You.”

The unexpected welcome for Holly and Ronan was captured on video and shared on TikTok, quickly gaining over 180,000 views. Traynor was joined by her 94-year-old mother during the reunion, which included “plenty of tears and hugs,” according to social media posts from those present.

Separately, nearly 200 Irish peacekeepers were welcomed home by family and friends at Dublin Airport following a six-month deployment with the United Nations, as documented in a recent Facebook post. The returning soldiers belonged to the 126th Infantry Battalion.

RTE 2FM host Carl Mullan reported a travel mishap shortly after beginning a family holiday, though details of the incident remain limited.
