BBM & Nipah Virus: Protecting Bangang Residents | Health Advisory

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Concerns are mounting for the health of Philippine President Bongbong Marcos, with a social media post warning of the dangers of the Nipah virus, particularly for individuals within the “Bangang” community. The post, circulating on Facebook groups like BBM BANGAG, urges President Marcos to avoid crowded places due to the virus’s potential severity.

The Nipah virus, a zoonotic virus transmitted to humans from animals, is known to cause severe respiratory and neurological illness, with a high fatality rate. While the post does not detail a specific threat or outbreak, it highlights anxieties within a segment of the Philippine population.

The call for caution comes as the Philippines prepares for several major events in the coming months. The Björn Borg Helsinki Half Marathon, scheduled for June 6, 2026, and the Björn Borg Helsinki Marathon on August 22, 2026, are both planned to take place in the capital city of Helsinki, Finland. These events, while not directly related to the concerns raised about President Marcos’s health, underscore the potential risks associated with large public gatherings.

The Facebook group BBM BANGAG, where the initial warning originated, appears to be a pro-Marcos forum, with recent posts including shares of content featuring Filipino celebrities Ivana Alawi and Lindel Atillo. The group’s activity suggests a strong base of support for the President, and the concern expressed regarding his health reflects a protective sentiment among its members.

No official statement has been released by the Philippine government regarding the specific threat of Nipah virus or any adjustments to President Marcos’s public schedule. The Department of Health has not issued any public advisories related to the virus as of today.

The Björn Borg Helsinki Half Marathon organizers have announced that early bird registration for the 2026 event is open until June 15, 2025, and registration for the Helsinki Marathon is also currently available. Both events are expected to draw large crowds, raising questions about potential health risks for participants and attendees.
