Uber Facing 3000+ Sexual Assault Lawsuits – Details

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

An $8.5 million verdict was reached last month in the first bellwether trial stemming from a consolidated legal action against Uber, alleging widespread sexual assault of passengers by its drivers. The judgment, delivered in the Northern District of California, marks a significant development in the ongoing litigation involving thousands of plaintiffs.

More than 3,700 individuals across 30 states have joined the lawsuit, formally known as In re: Uber Technologies Inc., Passenger Sexual Assault Litigation (MDL No. 3084). The number of plaintiffs is expected to increase throughout 2025, according to legal sources tracking the case.

The lawsuits allege that Uber failed to adequately screen drivers, ignored prior complaints of misconduct and did not implement sufficient safety measures to protect passengers. Plaintiffs claim the company is legally responsible for assaults committed by drivers, citing a pattern of negligence.

In October 2023, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) centralized the numerous Uber sexual assault cases in the Northern District of California to streamline the legal process. This consolidation, known as a Multidistrict Litigation (MDL), allows for coordinated discovery and pre-trial proceedings.

Attorneys representing the plaintiffs assert that evidence demonstrates a recurring issue: repeated warnings regarding potentially dangerous drivers were allegedly dismissed by Uber, leading to preventable assaults. “The evidence points to a pattern: repeated warnings about dangerous drivers, no action from Uber, and preventable assaults that followed,” a lawyer involved in the litigation stated.

The legal proceedings are actively accepting new cases, with lawyers continuing to consult with survivors nationwide. Individuals who believe they were assaulted by an Uber driver are encouraged to contact legal counsel at 800-553-8082 or through online channels.

The outcome of the initial trial and the ongoing MDL proceedings are being closely watched for their potential impact on future Uber sexual assault settlement amounts. Legal observers suggest that the strength of the cases and the established pattern of alleged negligence could lead to substantial settlements.
