Reliving the War: Wrestling Bios’ Monday Night Wars Series Finale | Raw & Nitro Coverage

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

The final episode of “Reliving the War,” a YouTube series meticulously documenting every episode of Monday Night Raw and WCW Nitro during the famed “Monday Night Wars,” concluded this week, bringing to a close a multi-year project examining a pivotal era in professional wrestling history.

The series, produced by Wrestling Bios, aimed to present an unedited, chronological viewing of both programs that battled for ratings dominance from September 4, 1995, until March 26, 2001, as detailed in a Wikipedia entry on the conflict. The Monday Night Wars saw the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) and World Championship Wrestling (WCW) engage in a fierce competition for television viewership, fundamentally altering the landscape of professional wrestling.

The competition between Raw and Nitro was characterized by distinct stylistic approaches. WCW, under the leadership of Eric Bischoff, often revealed results from WWF’s Raw during its Nitro broadcasts, a tactic intended to discourage viewers from watching the WWF product, according to an Amazon listing for a documentary on the era. This practice, alongside the signing of former WWF stars like Hulk Hogan and “Macho Man” Randy Savage, contributed to WCW’s initial success in the ratings.

Early in the conflict, Nitro consistently outperformed Raw. A Reddit post from September 2023 noted that Raw was, in the opinion of one commenter, “so much worse than Nitro in pretty much almost anything from the very start.” Though, the WWF eventually responded with a more aggressive and edgy presentation, known as the “Attitude Era,” which proved successful in reversing the ratings trend.

The “Monday Night War” concluded with the WWF’s acquisition of WCW in March 2001, effectively ending the competition and establishing WWE as the dominant force in professional wrestling. The series “Reliving the War” offered a comprehensive record of the build-up to, and fallout from, this landmark event.
