Facebook AI: Animate Profile Pics & New Creative Tools

by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Meta has begun rolling out a new feature for Facebook allowing users to animate their profile pictures, transforming static images into short video clips. The update, announced this week, offers a range of pre-set effects including “natural,” “party hat,” “confetti,” “wave,” and “heart,” enabling users to personalize their profile presentation.

The move reflects a broader trend within the technology sector, with companies increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance visual content and boost user engagement. Meta indicated that additional animations will be introduced throughout the year, timed to coincide with seasonal events and holidays.

To achieve optimal results, Meta recommends users upload photos featuring a single, forward-facing individual without prominent foreground objects. Images can be sourced from a user’s phone gallery or existing Facebook uploads. Once animated, the profile picture will be displayed on the user’s profile and shared in their news feed.

Alongside the animated profile pictures, Facebook is also introducing “Restyle,” a new creative tool powered by Meta AI. Restyle allows users to alter the appearance of photos used in Stories or Memories. Users can either provide a text description of the desired changes or select from pre-defined styles such as “anime,” “illustration,” “radiant,” “ethereal,” or “low-poly.” The tool also provides options to adjust lighting, color schemes, overall ambiance, and background scenery, offering choices like beaches or urban landscapes.

Text-based posts are also receiving a visual upgrade. Users can now select animated backgrounds, such as falling leaves or moving waves, by tapping a rainbow-colored “A” icon when creating a status update. Meta plans to release seasonal backgrounds to further enhance the visual appeal of posts.

This push for new features comes as Meta seeks to revitalize Facebook, which, despite boasting two billion daily active users, has seen its cultural influence wane in comparison to its sister platform, Instagram. The company is clearly betting on artificial intelligence to modernize Facebook, foster user creativity, and increase the platform’s appeal.
