iOS 16.3: iPhone to Android Transfer & New Features Explained

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Apple has released iOS 26.3, introducing a streamlined process for iPhone users to transfer their data to Android devices. The update, available as of Wednesday, also includes the ability to forward notifications to non-Apple smartwatches, a feature initially limited to users in the European Union.

The new transfer tool, accessible via Settings > General > Transfer or Restore iPhone > Transfer to Android, allows for wireless migration of photos, messages, contacts, apps, and eSIM profiles to compatible Android smartphones. Previously, users relied on third-party applications or cumbersome manual methods for this process. Apple also notes that Health data, paired Bluetooth devices, and locked notes will not be transferred.

Google has simultaneously implemented a comparable feature enabling data transfer from Android to iPhones, creating a reciprocal data portability system between the two dominant mobile operating systems. This development follows regulatory pressure on both companies to facilitate easier data migration for users, according to reports.

Beyond the Android transfer tool, iOS 26.3 introduces expanded notification forwarding capabilities. IPhone users in the EU can now route incoming notifications to third-party devices, such as smartwatches from manufacturers other than Apple. When enabled, notifications will no longer appear on the Apple Watch. The availability of this feature is currently restricted to the European Union, and it remains unclear when, or if, it will be rolled out to other regions.

The update also features a reorganized wallpaper gallery, separating Weather and Astronomy options into distinct categories. The Weather section now offers dynamic wallpapers that reflect local weather conditions, with customizable fonts and widgets. IOS 26.3 includes standard bug fixes and security enhancements.

Updating to iOS 26.3 can be done directly through the iPhone’s settings: Settings > General > Software Update. Apple recommends ensuring the device is connected to a Wi-Fi network and has sufficient battery life before initiating the download and installation process.

iOS 26.3 is compatible with iPhone models from the iPhone 11 onwards, encompassing the iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 series, including Pro, Pro Max, Plus, and mini variants, as well as the iPhone SE (2nd generation) and newer.

Looking ahead, the next major iOS update, expected to be iOS 26.4, is rumored to include significant changes, potentially featuring a revamped Siri powered by Gemini technology and improvements to the Health app.
