Palmetto Elementary Shooting: Lockdown Lifted, Students Safe

Palmetto Elementary School in Fulton County, Georgia, initiated a hard lockdown Tuesday afternoon following a shooting that occurred outside the school building, according to Fulton County Schools officials. No students were involved in the incident, and all students are confirmed safe.

Police activity is ongoing near the Palmetto Elementary campus as investigators process the scene. As a precautionary measure, students are being transported to Bear Creek Middle School, located in Fairburn, Georgia, where parents and guardians can pick them up. School officials have requested that parents and community members refrain from coming to Palmetto Elementary while the lockdown remains in effect, citing safety concerns.

Fulton County Schools confirmed that the incident prompted the lockdown and subsequent relocation of students. Additional updates are expected to be shared with families as more information becomes available, the district stated.

The Fulton County Board of Education held a working retreat on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at Parker Poe in Atlanta, and a work session at the FCS North Learning Center in Sandy Springs on February 10, 2026, though This proves currently unclear if these meetings are related to the incident at Palmetto Elementary.

Parents and teachers in Fulton County Schools have been encouraged to run for election to the School Governance Council (SGC), with the candidacy window open through March 27, 2026. Elected members will serve a two-year term beginning July 1, 2026.

A Federal Programs FY27 Input Meeting is scheduled for June 3, 2026, at 1 p.m., offering an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to provide feedback on district plans. The meeting will be held virtually via Microsoft Teams.

The application period for the 2026-2027 Pre-Kindergarten Lottery opened January 12, 2026, and will close March 3, 2026. Children must be four years old by September 1, 2026, and reside within the Fulton County Schools Attendance Zone to be eligible.
