La Rioja: Flu & Respiratory Infections Decline – Latest Updates

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Logroño, Spain – Health officials in La Rioja report a stabilization of respiratory infections, with a continued decline in cases of the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as of February 10, 2026. While the region remains in an epidemic phase for acute respiratory infections, hospital admissions are decreasing, signaling a potential easing of pressure on the healthcare system.

Currently, ten individuals are hospitalized with influenza, twelve with RSV, and no patients are hospitalized with COVID-19, according to data released by the Rioja Health Service. This represents a decrease in hospitalizations compared to the previous week. Eva Martínez, the Director General of Public Health, described the trend as “moderately optimistic, though still with prudence.”

The overall incidence of respiratory infections remains similar to the previous week, with a slight increase in influenza cases, rising from 32 to 36 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. However, the RSV incidence continues to fall, and no new cases of COVID-19 have been recorded. “The most positive thing is that hospital admissions have decreased and, as of today, no one is hospitalized with COVID,” Martínez stated.

Health authorities report that over 89,000 doses of influenza vaccine have been administered, achieving a coverage rate exceeding 70% among individuals over the age of 65. Public health officials continue to emphasize the importance of vaccination and protective measures, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Earlier in January, the region experienced a surge in RSV cases, impacting primarily infants and young children. Data from January 20th indicated an overall incidence of acute respiratory infections at 857.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, with the highest incidence observed in children under one year vintage and those aged one to four years. At that time, the incidence of influenza was reported at 104.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The Rioja Health Service will continue to provide weekly updates on the evolution of influenza, acute respiratory infections, and the associated hospital situation.
