SCOTT SIMON, HOST:
U.S. federal agents have shot and killed another person in Minneapolis. Local and state officials are again calling on the Trump administration to remove it’s officers from Minnesota. NPR’s Jennifer Ludden is in Minneapolis. Jennifer, thank you for being with us.
JENNIFER LUDDEN, BYLINE: Hi, Scott.
SIMON: What can you tell us about what’s happened?
LUDDEN: The shooting occurred around 9 o’clock this morning outside a doughnut shop south of downtown. The victim was a 37-year-old male. The Department of Homeland Security stated officers were conducting a targeted operation against an individual in the U.S. illegally, wanted for violent assault. DHS claims the man approached Border Patrol agents with a semiautomatic handgun, and agents fired after attempting to disarm him and fearing for their lives.
However, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara has stated he doesn’t know what transpired before his officers arrived. The victim has been identified, and officials believe he was a U.S. citizen, a white male with no criminal record, and a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry. Chief O’Hara also noted there was an unlawful gathering.
