Recent Enforcement Results
A recent special enforcement project revealed a notable number of drivers are disregarding pedestrian right-of-way laws. according to a press release from the DMPD on January 22, 2026, officers issued 157 citations during a one-week period in January. These citations were specifically for violations related to failing to yield to pedestrians in both marked and unmarked crosswalks.
The enforcement focused on areas identified as high-risk for pedestrian collisions, including downtown intersections and near schools. Officers utilized both marked and unmarked vehicles to observe driver behavior.
Why the Increased Focus on pedestrian Safety?
Pedestrian safety has become a growing concern in Des Moines. Data from the Iowa Department of Transportation shows a steady increase in pedestrian injuries and fatalities over the past five years. Officials attribute this trend to a combination of factors, including increased traffic volume, distracted driving, and a lack of awareness among both drivers and pedestrians.
