West Hartford Schools Undergo Deep Cleaning After Norovirus Outbreak

West Hartford Public schools are undergoing a thorough cleaning following a norovirus outbreak at Webster Hill Elementary School. Superintendent Paul Vicinus ordered the deep cleaning of all schools in the district as a precautionary measure to prevent further spread of the virus.

The outbreak at Webster Hill Elementary School was confirmed on January 19, 2026, leading to an increased number of student and staff absences. While the exact number of cases wasn’t promptly available, school officials reported a significant rise in gastrointestinal illness. Town of west Hartford officials are working closely with the school district to monitor the situation.

norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea. It spreads easily thru contaminated surfaces, food, and close contact with infected individuals. Symptoms typically appear 12 to 48 hours after exposure and usually resolve within 1 to 3 days.

“The health and safety of our students and staff is our top priority,” said Superintendent Vicinus in a statement. “We are taking this step to ensure a clean and healthy learning habitat for everyone.”

The deep cleaning process includes disinfecting frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, desks, and restrooms. Custodial staff are using EPA-approved disinfectants effective against norovirus. The Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC) provides detailed guidance on preventing the spread of norovirus, including proper handwashing techniques and cleaning protocols.

Parents are encouraged to keep sick children home from school and to consult with a healthcare provider if they suspect their child has norovirus. The school district is also reinforcing proper hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing, with students and staff. The Connecticut Department of Public Health is also monitoring the situation and providing support to local health officials.

School officials anticipate the deep cleaning will be completed by January 22, 2026, and schools will operate on a normal schedule. Updates will be provided as needed through the school district’s website and dialog channels.
