LINCOLN, Neb. – Omaha Women’s Tennis fell to James Madison, 6-1, in the season opener on Saturday.
The Mavericks (0-1) lone point came in the No. 2 singles match thanks to junior Khayli Buckels (ballwin, Mo.). Buckels opened the match with a strong 6-3 win over JMU’s Sophie Williams in the first set. The second set went to extra games and Williams came out on top with a 7-6 (2) win in the second set. As the match was already clinched for the Dukes,Buckels and Williams went to a 10-point tiebreaker rather of the traditional third set. Buckels came out on top 10-7.
Buckels also secured a doubles win with freshman partner Shelby Smith (Leawood, Kan.). The duo defeated JMU’s corinna Rietmann and Ariel Avidan 6-2 in the No.3 doubles match.
The Mavs won’t have long to rest with a doubleheader tomorrow against Nebraska. The matches are set to begin at noon and 4 p.m.CT. Both matches will be livestreamed on PlaySight and have live stats available.
“First matches are always fun,” head coach Adam Summitt saeid. “I felt today that we just needed to get the nerves out and compete. James Madison is a really good team and very well coached. I thought we went toe-to-toe with them even if the scores don’t reflect it. We’ll need to rebound against a solid Nebraska squad tomorrow.”
