Rather of pausing operations, Trump significantly increased the ICE presence in Minneapolis by a reported 2,000 agents.Vice President JD Vance even declared Ross has “absolute immunity,” highlighting the management’s control over law enforcement and, consequently, the American people.

The deployment of ICE agents to Minneapolis occurred without warning, setting a concerning precedent.This action, coupled with similar moves in other cities, suggests a broader shift towards a police state, happening subtly and rapidly.
What Defines a Police State?
A police state is characterized by a government exerting control over it’s citizens through the weaponization of military and law enforcement power. This control is often subtle yet pervasive and dangerous – precisely the surroundings Trump appears to be cultivating.
Expanding Federal Intervention
The president has dispatched military and immigration officials to cities like Chicago and Washington, D.C., leading to ongoing legal challenges. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt expressed confidence in the president’s legal authority, stating, “We’re very confident we will win on the merits of the law.”
Resistance from State Governments
However, this assertion of federal power has faced pushback. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker accused Trump of attempting to “manufacture a crisis” and filed a lawsuit to counter the deployment of National Guard troops. In Minnesota, Governor Tim Walz warned residents of a potential attempt to invoke the Insurrection Act and impose martial law.
The Role of Mass Deportation in Creating Fear
Arguments supporting the claim that the U.S. is entering a police state also point to Trump’s aggressive deportation policies. A Brookings study revealed a negative net migration report in 2025, a frist for the U.S. in over 50 years. The widely publicized deportation cases of activists like Mahmoud Khalil and Kilmar Ábrego García have instilled fear throughout the country, regardless of immigration status. This fear is a crucial component of a prosperous police state.

Democrats have long cautioned against the possibility of a police state. Former Vice President Kamala Harris famously predicted Trump would target political enemies, deploy the military against Americans, and undermine civil rights before losing the 2024 presidential election.
