Eli Iserbyt Retires: A Promising Cyclocross Career Cut Short by Vascular Issues

Eli Iserbyt, a prominent figure in the world of cyclo-cross, has announced his immediate retirement from professional cycling. The heartbreaking news, delivered via an emotional Instagram video on Thursday, stems from a persistent medical condition involving reduced blood flow in his femoral artery. This brings an abrupt end to the career of a rider who consistently demonstrated exceptional talent and determination.
A Career Defined by success and Resilience
Iserbyt, at just 28 years old, leaves behind a legacy marked by critically important achievements in the demanding discipline of cyclo-cross. His accolades include a European Championship victory in 2020, and two bronze medals at the World Championships in both 2023 and 2024. Demonstrating his dominance on home soil, he secured the Belgian national title in 2024, adding to his impressive collection of wins.He also twice claimed the overall World Cup series title, in 2022 and again in 2024, solidifying his position as one of the sport’s elite competitors.
However, Iserbyt’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. In recent years, he battled with sciatica, originating from a compressed intervertebral disc in his lower back. This caused debilitating back pain and radiating discomfort down his left leg, notably after sudden movements. The condition initially manifested as Piriformis syndrome, where a muscle compresses the sciatic nerve, forcing him to withdraw from several races in 2024.
The Underlying Vascular Issue
Initial diagnoses pointed towards Piriformis syndrome, but further investigation by his team doctor, Frank De winter of Pauwels Sauzen, revealed a more serious underlying issue. Diagnostic tests revealed reduced blood circulation in his left leg, ultimately pinpointing the problem to a restriction in the femoral artery. As De Winter explained in 2024, “That examination confirmed the reduced blood flow in the femoral artery. This appeared to be a clear explanation for the reduced performance, which was entirely out of line with Eli’s normal level.”
The femoral artery is a major blood vessel supplying the leg, and reduced blood flow can significantly impair athletic performance and overall health. This condition presented a substantial obstacle to Iserbyt’s continued career.
A Final Victory and a Difficult Decision
Despite the health concerns, Iserbyt demonstrated his unwavering spirit by achieving one last victory at the X2O Trofee Baal-GP Sven Nys on January 1, 2025. However, this proved to be his final competitive appearance. He attempted a return to racing, but a subsequent relapse after undergoing four surgeries to improve blood flow through the femoral artery ultimately forced him to confront the reality that his body could no longer withstand the demands of professional cycling.
In November of 2025, Iserbyt announced his retirement, acknowledging that a full recovery and return to competition were no longer feasible. He expressed his gratitude to fans, teammates, and supporters in his emotional Instagram message, stating, “I’ve always shared the lovely moments with you, but now I also wanted to share this news with you: that, unluckily, it is no longer possible for me to continue my career.”
What is Femoral Artery Restriction?
The femoral artery is the largest artery in the thigh, responsible for delivering oxygen-rich blood to the leg and foot. Restrictions in this artery, often caused by atherosclerosis (plaque buildup) or, in rarer cases, anatomical abnormalities, can lead to a variety of symptoms, including pain, cramping, fatigue, and reduced performance. In athletes, even mild restrictions can significantly impact endurance and power output. Treatment options range from lifestyle modifications and medication to surgical interventions like angioplasty or bypass surgery.
Looking Ahead
Eli Iserbyt’s retirement marks the end of a promising career. while his time in the saddle may be over, his contributions to the sport of cyclo-cross will not be forgotten. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the physical and mental demands placed on athletes, and the importance of prioritizing health and well-being. As he embarks on a new chapter, fans and the cycling community alike wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
