US Echoes past Intervention as protests ⁢Planned Against Venezuela Threats

Baltimore, MD – As the Trump administration ‍authorizes ongoing military strikes targeting vessels in the ⁢Caribbean and Pacific, and increasingly signals ⁢potential military action against Venezuela, a renewed wave of protests is planned⁢ across the United States this⁢ Saturday. These demonstrations draw a direct line to⁣ decades of US intervention in Latin America and the domestic resistance it sparked, a history revisited in the podcast Stories⁣ of Resistance.

The current situation echoes the ⁤1980s, when the Reagan administration⁣ supported the Contras, a rebel group seeking to overthrow the Sandinista government in Nicaragua. ⁣Despite ‌congressional amendments limiting US assistance to the Contras, the administration circumvented ‍these restrictions through the covert and illegal Iran-Contra affair,⁢ a scandal that broke in 1986 and substantially‌ damaged Reagan’s⁣ public approval.

Throughout this period, a robust movement emerged within the United States opposing US⁤ policy in Central america. ⁣Citizens organized marches and demonstrations, expressing solidarity with the‌ region and demanding self-determination for its nations. Activists challenged the US practice of fueling⁣ violence, conducting attacks, and threatening invasion in neighboring countries.

“people marched…voices in the United states standing‍ up to US intervention,”⁢ recounted Michael Fox,host of Stories of‌ Resistance,in a recent episode. “Standing in solidarity with Central America…demanding that people and countries abroad be allowed to decide‍ thier‌ own destiny without the intervening hand of the United ‍States.”

The‍ podcast ‍ Under the Shadow, produced alongside Stories of Resistance, dedicates Episode 10 to examining the⁢ US role in Nicaragua during the 1980s and the accompanying resistance ‍movement.

Stories of Resistance recently received both a Gold⁣ Signal award for best history podcast ⁢and a Gold ⁢Anthem Award in ⁤the category of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The podcast is produced by‍ The Real News and aims ‌to provide inspiration during challenging times by highlighting stories of resistance and hope. Episodes and show notes,⁢ including links to further resources, are available through ⁣podcast platforms⁣ and at therealnews.com.
