Title: Cabin Acoustics in Aircraft Design: MDAO & Optimization

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Braunschweig, Germany – Researchers at TU Braunschweig are pioneering a new approach to aircraft design, integrating cabin acoustics into the preliminary design process to improve sustainability and reduce costly retrofits. The work addresses the impact of new technologies and fuselage designs on cabin noise, aiming to proactively manage acoustics alongside traditional engineering disciplines.

The team is employing a Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimization (MDAO) approach, leveraging the PANDORA framework for structural dimensioning and cabin acoustics. High-fidelity models generated with the FUGA (Fuselage geometry Assembler) tool provide accurate cabin noise predictions during preliminary design. To overcome computational limitations associated with these detailed models within the MDAO process, researchers are investigating data-adapted surrogate models as a faster choice to intensive numerical simulations. The methodology’s applicability and potential for cross-disciplinary optimization have been demonstrated.

Lecturer

Pia Allebrodt, recipient of the 2025 VDI Aerospace Prize, and Dr. Jörn Biedermann, head of the department for integrated cabins and industrialization, are leading the research.
