From Mountain Trails to the Pro Peloton: Ezra Caudell’s Unique Path to Modern Adventure
Ezra Caudell’s journey to professional cycling is anything but typical. The young rider recently signed a two-year contract wiht George hincapie’s new American ProTeam, Modern Adventure, after a season that saw him transition from a dedicated mountain biker with promising road results. The offer came as a complete surprise, following months of conversation initiated after connecting within the sport.
“It was a crazy experience,” Caudell recounted. “Going from a dedicated mountain biker at the beginning of the year, training primarily on the road and having some good results, and then getting a call from George Hincapie for this new american ProTeam… it was unexpected.”
Caudell expressed deep gratitude for the possibility and excitement about the prospect of professional development over the next two years. His initial focus for the 2026 season will be gaining experience within the pro peloton, understanding his role within the team, and maintaining consistent health and fitness. While his primary focus will be road racing, he anticipates potential opportunities in gravel events, with a long-term interest in perhaps returning to mountain biking.
Describing his riding style, Caudell identifies as a breakaway rider, especially suited to the demands of Classic-style races. He believes a key asset he brings to Modern Adventure, even before competition begins, is his confidence.
“I’ve always loved the road because I feel like there’s such little pressure,” Caudell explained. ”I’ve always felt so much pressure with mountain biking, and I feel like I almost have something to live up to. With road,I feel like I have nothing to prove, and I can just go out there and do really good and nobody knows me. So,I can really not worry about being stressed for getting a specific result.”
Looking ahead,Caudell has identified two “must-do” races for his calendar within the next two years: Paris-Roubaix and Strade Bianche, both considered iconic and challenging events in the professional cycling world.
as a U23 rider, Caudell has outlined three key goals. first, he aims to absorb as much knowledge as possible from experienced teammates and staff.Second, he’s eager to explore time trialing, believing his physique may be well-suited to the discipline, despite having never ridden a TT bike before. he hopes to demonstrate that there are multiple pathways to professional cycling success, proving that riders don’t necessarily need to come through established road development programs to reach the top.
Beyond cycling, Caudell enjoys a variety of hobbies. Previously, in Georgia, he spent his free time building trails with friends. As relocating to Germany, he’s embraced travel, exploring castles, cafes, and Christmas markets. He also enjoys hiking and, alongside his sister, assisting in the kitchen – though he jokingly admits he’s primarily a helper in the baking process.
