Naples Woman Faces Felony Charge in Dog’s Neglect Death
COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. - A 69-year-old Naples woman has been arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty after her 11-year-old Pomeranian mix died from conditions authorities say stemmed from severe neglect. Yvonne Pepper was taken into custody Tuesday by Collier County deputies.
The examination began when a local veterinarian contacted Collier County animal Control with concerns about the dog, named Gremlin. The vet reported Gremlin was unable to walk or stand and had stopped eating. Examination revealed a multitude of preventable medical issues, including severely rotted teeth, overgrown nails, extensive fur matting, ulcers in both eyes and on all four paw pads, pressure sores on both elbows, a skin infection, and an infected wound under his jaw.
Veterinarians determined the prolonged infection led to sepsis, and Gremlin ultimately died after experiencing a cardiac event while under medical care.
Detectives visiting Pepper’s home on Tuesday reported finding the residence in a state of disrepair, with dog feces and urine present throughout, and a significant accumulation of dog fur. pepper reportedly admitted to being overwhelmed and failing to provide Gremlin with necessary veterinary attention, acknowledging he had been in obvious decline.
Aggravated animal cruelty is a felony in Florida, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The Collier County sheriff’s Office continues to investigate.
