Retro Gaming Takes a Step Forward: Play SNES Games in These Modified Sneakers
Milan, Italy – A designer has created functional sneakers that allow wearers to play classic Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) games. Dubbed “AIR SNES,” the modified Nike air Max 90s house a Raspberry Pi Zero W computer, enabling 16-bit gaming on the go.
The project, conceived by designer Bonzanini, addresses the desire to merge nostalgia with modern technology. While unable to accommodate actual SNES cartridges due to size constraints, the AIR SNES utilizes RetroPie emulation software. All electronics, including a battery providing approximately 30 minutes of gameplay, are concealed within the sneaker’s tongue. To maintain a retro aesthetic, the device connects to a television via RCA cables using an added analogue converter, despite the Raspberry Pi Zero W’s native HDMI connection.
The sneakers’ color scheme is directly inspired by the Super Famicom console, featuring gray and purple hues. Original Super Famicom gamepads are compatible, with a modification allowing wireless connection to the Raspberry Pi Zero W via Bluetooth, eliminating the need for cumbersome cables.
