Respiratory Infection Season Arrives: Flu and COVID-19 Vaccines Now Available
Table of Contents
Curaçao – The Ministry of Health, Habitat and Nature (GMN) has announced the start of the annual respiratory infection season, typically occurring around the year’s end. The Ministry, working closely with general practitioners, the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC), and local laboratories, is actively monitoring infection rates within the community.
Vaccination options
Flu vaccinations are currently accessible through yoru primary care physician (GP) and participating local pharmacies. A recently updated COVID-19 vaccine is being offered starting this Wednesday at the Infectious Disease Control department of G&GZ, located on Piscaderweg. Both vaccines are recommended for individuals in identified risk groups, as well as those seeking additional protection against these illnesses.
Who Should Get Vaccinated?
The GMN has identified the following groups as being at higher risk and strongly encourages vaccination: individuals aged 60 and over, those between 18 and 59 with underlying medical conditions or severe obesity, healthcare professionals with direct patient contact, and residents of healthcare institutions.
Recognizing Symptoms and Seeking Care
The Ministry emphasizes that symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, muscle aches, and fatigue can be indicative of both influenza and COVID-19. The majority of individuals experience mild symptoms and recover within one to two weeks. However, anyone requiring medical attention is advised to remain at home and contact their GP or GP post via telephone for guidance.
Preventative Measures Remain Crucial
The government continues to stress the importance of practicing good hygiene to limit the spread of respiratory infections. Key preventative measures include covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow, frequent handwashing, maintaining physical distance when possible, and regularly cleaning shared surfaces.
COVID-19 Vaccination Details at G&GZ
COVID-19 vaccinations at G&GZ are available Monday through Thursday between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM, and again from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM. For individuals who are unable to travel, home visits or appointments at a healthcare facility can be scheduled by contacting 514-2860.
