Elon Musk Urges Retention of H-1B Visas, Voices Opposition to US Tariffs
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has publicly advocated for maintaining the H-1B visa program for skilled workers and sharply criticized the use of tariffs as a core economic strategy by the US government.Musk revealed he directly attempted to persuade former President Donald Trump to reconsider his tariff policies, arguing they create damaging market distortions.
The debate over H-1B visas and tariffs comes as the US navigates ongoing trade negotiations with India, a key economic partner. While other nations have secured trade agreements with the US,indian exports currently face some of the highest tariff rates globally. These policies impact a broad range of industries and possibly hinder economic growth for both countries, with bilateral trade deal negotiations expected to conclude by year-end.
Musk’s opposition to tariffs isn’t new, but his disclosure of direct appeals to trump underscores the ongoing tension between business leaders and protectionist trade policies. He believes tariffs disrupt established markets and ultimately prove counterproductive. Earlier this year, the US implemented a 50 percent tariff on certain Indian goods, alongside a 25 percent penalty on purchases of Russian oil.
