European Fraud Probe Targets Former EU Official mogherini
Brussels – Febuary 12, 2025 – European authorities have launched a fraud investigation targeting Federica Mogherini, the former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, according to sources familiar with the matter. The probe centers on allegations of improper financial dealings during her tenure as the EU’s top diplomat from 2014 to 2019.
Mogherini, 52, currently serves as rector of the College of Europe – a postgraduate university specializing in the training of diplomats founded in 1949 to foster “a spirit of solidarity and mutual understanding between all the nations of Western Europe.” She also directs the European Union Diplomatic Academy and previously oversaw the European External Action Service (EEAS) during her five years as a European Commissioner.
The investigation is being conducted by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), the EU’s independent public prosecution office responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes against the EU’s financial interests.
Prior to her role in Brussels, the Italian politician served six years in Italy’s parliament and briefly held the position of Italy’s foreign minister in 2014. During her time as High Representative, Mogherini played a leading role in the 2015 negotiations with Iran on the nuclear deal, later abandoned by the Trump governance.
The EEAS, established in 2010, operates with a substantial budget – €880.2 million (approximately $1.02 billion at current exchange rates) in 2024 – to execute EU international relations. Details of the specific allegations against Mogherini have not yet been publicly released. Further updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
