Fantasy RPG ‘The Wayward Realms’ Switches to Proprietary Engine, Delays Release

OnceLost Games has announced a⁣ significant shift in development for its upcoming fantasy RPG, The Wayward Realms, opting to move away from the Unreal Engine in favor of a new, proprietary engine. According to a recent Steam blog post, the studio believes this change “positions us to deliver a far better game.”

The decision follows feedback from fans, and OnceLost states the new engine will allow ⁢the game to achieve over 30 FPS on “decade old laptops without dedicated GPUs” and the original nintendo Switch.developers also highlighted a map “four times the size of Manhattan” that loads in under‍ one second, a full engine load time of 300 milliseconds – which has “already more than doubled our development ⁢speed” ⁣- and plans for full community modding support.

Though, this transition will impact the‍ game’s release schedule. Kickstarter backers will‌ now receive access in June ⁣2026, with a public Early ‌Access period ⁢planned for the months following. ⁣Further updates are expected beginning December 3rd.
