Ukraine Peace Talks Resume Sunday, Focused on independence and Sovereignty
Talks aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine are set too resume Sunday, building on amendments to a U.S.-led peace plan negotiated last week in geneva. The discussions, taking place in Florida, involve a U.S.delegation including Secretary of State Antony Blinken,Senator Marco Rubio,Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, according to The New York Times.
Rustem Umerov, head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, stated he anticipates a “productive” meeting with the American delegation, adding he is in “permanent contact” with President Volodymyr Zelensky. “We have clear directives and priorities: preserving Ukrainian interests, ensuring constructive dialog and moving forward on the basis of the progress made in Geneva,” Umerov saeid. “The United States hears us.The United States supports us. The United States is working alongside us.”
Secretary Blinken stated the goal of the bilateral discussions is “to end a war in a way that creates a mechanism and a path forward that will allow [Ukraine] to be independent and sovereign, never to experience war again, and to create remarkable prosperity for their people.”
President zelensky indicated the talks will be based on revisions to the 28-point American plan initially presented ten days ago. That original plan, intended to end the conflict, faced criticism for allegedly favoring Moscow. While amendments were made in Geneva, Kyiv reportedly harbors concerns about potentially notable concessions required for final approval by all belligerents and European partners.
