A Life Dedicated to Style and Community: Remembering Salvatore James Cutrona Sr.
Salvatore James cutrona Sr., a beloved hairstylist and pillar of his community, passed away peacefully. He is remembered fondly by his partner of 14 years, Joseph Gentile, who provided devoted care and companionship, especially during Sal’s final months, offering constant comfort, patience, and love. Sal also leaves behind his brothers, Vince (Joan), Franny (Lisa), and Phil, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews whom he cherished deeply.
Born and raised in Wilmington‘s Little Italy neighborhood, Sal took great pride in his family’s deep-rooted traditions and their longstanding connection to St. Anthony of Padua Parish. He graduated from Salesianum School in 1966 and later earned his cosmetology licence from the Academy of Hair,launching a remarkable 50-year career.
For the past eight years, sal resided in Rehoboth beach with Joe, embracing the joy of beachside living and the warmth of a welcoming community.Known for his engaging personality, Sal quickly forged lasting friendships, leaving behind a wide circle who will miss his humor, flair, and unmistakable sparkle. He had a particular fondness for Halloween, delighting in crafting creative costumes and decorations that showcased his imagination.
Sal’s career as a hairstylist was a testament to his artistic brilliance and dedication to making others feel their best.He worked at John Wanamaker & Co., JCPenney, All About Hair, and spent over 35 years at Michael Christopher Designs-a salon he considered a second family. He became renowned for his master styling skills and the personal attention he gave each client, viewing his profession as a true passion.
Beyond the salon, Sal generously volunteered with the Miss Delaware Scholarship Institution for many years. he took immense pride in styling the hair of numerous Miss Delawares and was celebrated for designing imaginative, show-stopping shoes for the miss America “Show Us Your Shoes” Parade, creations that perfectly reflected his creativity.
Sal also possessed a deep love for travel, embracing every experience with enthusiasm, curiosity, and joy. His journeys enriched his life, providing him with stories and inspiration he readily shared with others.
A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., monday, December 8, at Parsell Funeral homes & crematorium, Atkins-lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Hwy., Lewes, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11 a.m. For those unable to attend,a livestream will be available at: parsellfuneralhomes.com/obituaries/permalink/11971898/LTWebcast.
