Orange Cassidy Reveals he Initially Joined AEW With ‘nothing to Lose’
Orange Cassidy, currently boasting a combined 471-day reign as AEW International Champion, reflected on his humble beginnings with the promotion, revealing he initially approached his role with remarkably low expectations. The former champion stated he didn’t envision himself becoming a main event player when he first signed with AEW.
Cassidy’s comments offer a rare glimpse into the mindset of a performer who has risen to prominence within a rapidly growing wrestling organization. His story underscores the value of embracing opportunity and the impact of mentorship, particularly for wrestlers navigating the evolving landscape of professional wrestling. It also highlights how a lack of initial pressure can foster creativity and ultimately lead to success.
During a recent interview with Adrian Hernandez,Cassidy recalled his early days as “the friend” alongside Chuck Taylor and Trent Beretta.”I was such low stakes,” he explained.”My part was so minor that I was like: ‘Well, if no one cares, then it won’t matter.'” He further elaborated that observing the success of his peers, while he received limited opportunities, led him to a point of fearless experimentation. “I had such low stakes… and then even before AEW, you know, when all my friends and the people I grew up wrestling with are getting all of these opportunities, and I was getting nothing, like, it’s ‘I got nothing to lose.'”
Cassidy credited AEW for providing a platform to learn and grow, specifically praising the contributions of veterans like Chris Jericho and Matt Hardy. “I am very, very lucky that AEW allowed me – and the people that I got to wrestle against? I learned from everybody that I wrestled, especially in those early days,” he said. “It was great…I was lucky.”
