Boniek Celebrates Widzew Łódź’s First League Win in Over a Month
Widzew Łódź ended a frustrating winless streak in the Ekstraklasa with a 2-0 victory over Piast Gliwice on friday, prompting a celebratory reaction from club legend Zbigniew Boniek. The win, secured through goals from Sebastian Bergier (penalty, 22nd minute) and Andi Zeqiri (second half), marks Widzew’s first league triumph as October 17th against Radomiak Radom.
The victory is a significant boost for Widzew, who had previously endured three league losses and a single draw against Legia Warszawa in their last four Ekstraklasa matches, alongside their elimination from the Polish Cup by Zagłębie Lubin. The result lifts them to 10th place in the tightly contested league table, though they remain only three points above the relegation zone currently occupied by Lechia.
Boniek, the former president of the Polish football association, expressed his delight on Twitter, sharing a photo of Bergier and zeqiri, the goalscorers. His message was succinct: “More moments like this.” He also commented on Zeqiri’s performance, stating, “Zeqiri has woken up. This is a good prognosis before the cup match.” Zeqiri’s goal was his first in the Ekstraklasa, coming after a reported €2 million transfer fee.
widzew will continue their season with a Polish Cup 1/8-final match against Pogoń Szczecin on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m., followed by an away league game against Zagłębie Lubin on Saturday. Zagłębie currently sit just ahead of Widzew in the Ekstraklasa standings and will play their 17th-round match against Jagiellonia Białystok on Sunday.
