Babson College Student Deported to honduras Despite Federal Court Order
A Babson College student was deported to Honduras this week despite a federal judge’s emergency order temporarily halting his removal from the United States, according to his attorney and reports from The boston Globe and The Associated Press. The student, identified as López Belloza, was detained by Immigration and Customs enforcement (ICE) while traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday and flown to Honduras.
The case raises serious questions about ICE’s adherence to judicial rulings and the potential disruption of educational pursuits for immigrant students. A judge issued the 72-hour order on the day of López Belloza’s arrest, prohibiting his removal from Massachusetts or the U.S., but ICE reportedly proceeded with the deportation. His lawyer argues that López Belloza was unaware of a prior 2015 deportation order and that official records indicate his case was closed in 2017.
According to ICE, an immigration judge had ordered López Belloza’s deportation in 2015. However, his attorney, Pomerleau, stated he was unaware of the order and found records indicating the case was closed in 2017. “They hold her responsible for something that, they claim, happened a decade ago, something that she has no idea about and for which they presented no evidence,” Pomerleau said.
López Belloza was reportedly looking forward to sharing news of his frist semester studying business with his family in Honduras. “That was my dream,” he told The Boston Globe.”I’m losing everything.”
ICE did not respond to an email from The Associated Press seeking comment on the violation of the court order.Babson College also did not respond to a request for comment. The situation remains fluid as López Belloza is now with his grandparents in Honduras.
