GAINESVILLE, Fla.(AP) - The University of Florida is targeting Tulane coach Jon Sumrall as its next head football coach, a person with knowledge of the search said Friday.The move comes after Florida fired Billy Napier in mid-October following a 22-23 record over four seasons.
Sumrall, who has led Tulane to a 25-4 record over three seasons, would represent a shift in direction for the Gators, who had also pursued other high-profile candidates like Louisville’s Jeff Brohm and washington’s Jedd Fisch.Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin is seeking a coach to revitalize a program that has struggled in the Southeastern Conference, where Napier earned the nickname “Sun Belt Billy” for perceived shortcomings against tougher competition.The pursuit of Sumrall unfolded rapidly after Lane Kiffin opted to remain at Ole Miss rather of taking the Florida job.
