MONTGOMERY TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania (WPVI) – For half a century, a group of friends has convened annually the day after Thanksgiving, not for a meal, but for a spirited game of hockey. The tradition, originating with the North penn High School Class of 1975, continues to draw participants back to Fellowship Park, demonstrating a bond that transcends decades.
What began as a post-college reunion for former classmates has evolved into a steadfast tradition, fueled by a shared love of hockey ignited during the Philadelphia flyers’ 1975 Stanley Cup run. the group, comprised of both former school team players and street hockey enthusiasts, shows no signs of relinquishing thier annual contest.
The initial gathering in 1975 served as a way for friends to reconnect after dispersing for higher education. Some had competed in organized hockey during their school years, while others discovered the sport through casual games. The excitement surrounding the Flyers‘ consecutive Stanley Cup championships-a period of local sporting fervor-provided a common ground and a catalyst for the tradition.
“Whether it’s 1975 or 2025, their instructions are the same: meet at Fellowship Park the day after Thanksgiving to play hockey,” reflects the enduring nature of the event.
The annual game is more than just a sporting event; it’s a celebration of lifelong friendship and a testament to the power of shared experiences.Organizers say they have no intention of ending the tradition anytime soon.
