Hofstra Women’s Basketball Falls to East Carolina, 73-53, in Puerto Rico
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Hofstra university women’s basketball concluded its Puerto Rico trip with a 73-53 defeat to East Carolina University on Sunday, evening its season record to 4-4. The Pride struggled to overcome a strong start by the Pirates adn ultimately fell short despite a season-high 10 steals.
The loss marks the second all-time meeting between Hofstra and East carolina, and the first as December 3, 2000. Despite the setback, several Pride players showcased strong individual performances. Alarice Gooden led Hofstra with 10 points in a season-high 37 minutes,adding four rebounds,two steals,an assist,and a block. Ayen Angoi contributed eight points and a game-high eight rebounds, while Sana’a Garrett dished out two assists.
East Carolina jumped out to a 9-0 led before Gooden scored Hofstra’s first points with a three-pointer at the 7:40 mark. The Pirates extended their advantage, leading 25-12 at the end of the first quarter after a 10-0 run. ECU maintained control throughout the game, building a lead as large as 20 points in the third quarter. Hofstra responded with a 10-3 run to close the third, but couldn’t fully close the gap.
The fourth quarter saw Hofstra open with a Maddie Pounds layup,but East Carolina quickly answered with eight consecutive points. A late three-pointer from Gooden at 4:13 proved insufficient to overcome the Pirates’ double-digit lead.
Taylor Barner paced East Carolina with 18 points, followed by Savannah Brooks (12) and Kennedy Fauntleroy and Anzhané hutton (11 each). Keanna Rembert led the Pirates in rebounding with five.
Hofstra will return to the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex for its next two games, begining with a matchup against Fordham on Saturday, December 6, at 2 p.m.
