Imran Sherwani, the celebrated Great Britain hockey player whose two goals secured a historic gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, has died at the age of 63. The news has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the hockey world, recognizing Sherwani’s pivotal role in one of British sport’s most memorable moments.

Sherwani’s winning goal against germany sparked a frenzy of excitement, famously prompting BBC commentator Barry Davies to ask, “Where were the Germans? But frankly, who cares!” The victory marked Britain’s greatest hockey achievement in decades and cemented Sherwani’s place as a national sporting icon. He was the third Asian player to represent Great Britain, following Sutinder Kehar and Kulbir Bhaura, and a teammate of Bhaura’s in the 1988 Games.

Born into a sporting family – his father played hockey for Pakistan, and his great uncles competed for Stoke City and Port Vale – Sherwani’s talent on the field was undeniable. Recalling the winning goal in Seoul,he said: “Batch [Steve Batchelor] did the German and I just carried on for his pass and met it as it came across and slotted home. It was just incredible and I think we knew then. It felt like that was it.I still get emotional about it. The win, the team, it is all just a fantastic story and I am privileged and lucky enough to be part of it.”

Following his olympic triumph,Sherwani continued to contribute to the sport, joining Leek Hockey Club in 1996 and spearheading a period of unprecedented success. While his Olympic goals are legendary,he often cited Leek’s 6-2 victory against Old Georgians in 2003,securing their promotion to the National League,as his proudest achievement.

Rich Beer, chief operating officer of Great Britain Hockey, stated: “Imran Sherwani will forever be remembered as one of the true icons of england and Great Britain hockey. His talent, leadership and humility inspired generations of players and fans alike.” Leek hockey Club added that Sherwani was “arguably their most influential” player and will be “sadly missed by all.”
