Microsoft Warns Windows 11S New AI Feature Coudl Install Viruses

REDMOND,WA – Microsoft has cautioned Windows 11 users participating ⁤in the Insider program that it’s experimental “Agent Workspace” feature, designed to grant AI‍ agents access to system files, carries inherent security risks ‍- including the potential for agents to install⁤ viruses. The warning accompanies the rollout⁢ of the ‌feature to a private developer preview, with broader availability planned for Windows Insiders.

The Agent Workspace ⁣is an extension ‌of the existing “Ask Copilot” AI assistant, allowing AI applications to operate in the background with access to files while users continue working. Microsoft acknowledges the risk, stating security is a “continuous commitment”‌ that will evolve alongside the⁢ technology. The system utilizes “scoped authorization and⁢ runtime isolation” to create boundaries between agent activity and user control, theoretically allowing users to manage⁢ and halt ‌agent access ‍at any time.

Currently, no applications fully support ‍the new functionality, and the initial ⁣release is limited to developers to ‌”gather feedback and‌ strengthen foundational security.” Despite assurances of control,⁤ the announcement has ⁣sparked concern among users online, with many voicing dissent on platforms ‍like X (formerly ⁢Twitter) and Reddit. ‍Microsoft emphasizes that⁤ the feature is experimental and security measures will be adapted over ‌time.
