Labor Directorate Bolsters Inspections with New Tech, Addresses Worker Concerns at Minera Spence
Antofagasta, Chile - The Labor Directorate (DT) is modernizing its inspection process nationwide with the rollout of a new Inspection Management System (SGI), equipping inspectors with tablets to streamline data collection and enforcement. The initiative, announced this week during a visit by DT director(s) to Antofagasta,Calama, and tocopilla, aims to increase openness and efficiency in labor rights enforcement.
The SGI allows inspectors to access company information online, record findings directly into tablets during site visits, and instantly determine if sanctions are necessary – replacing the previous paper-based system. “This new form of inspection is the main support of the new National Inspection Policy, recently created, and that will make the defense of the labor rights of workers more vigorous and efficient,” stated sergio Santibáñez, a DT representative.
During the visit, the DT director(s) also engaged with key labor stakeholders in the region. Meetings were held with the Antofagasta Regional Mining Safety Council, the Confederation of Copper Workers and FESITRAN (attended by approximately 300 worker representatives), and the board of directors of the BHP Billiton Federation of unions, owner of the Spence mine.
At the meeting with BHP Billiton union leaders, the DT presented its new free electronic union voting system and discussed a recent opinion validating and legally enforcing framework agreements between companies and unions. The directorate confirmed it is receptive to union complaints and actively working to address worker concerns, particularly at sites like Minera Spence.
A total of 27 tablets were distributed across the region: 9 to the Loa inspection, 1 to the Tocopilla Inspection, and 17 to the Antofagasta Inspection. The DT anticipates the new system will benefit workers, union leaders, and employers alike.
