Austin‘s Operation Turkey delivers Thousands of thanksgiving Meals
Austin, TX – Operation turkey mobilized hundreds of volunteers today to prepare and deliver thousands of Thanksgiving meals across the city, continuing a 26-year tradition of serving those in need. The organization began prepping meals early this morning, with volunteers working to debone turkeys, prepare side dishes, and package complete Thanksgiving dinners for delivery.
For over a quarter-century, Operation Turkey has provided a vital service to the Austin community, ensuring everyone has access to a warm meal on Thanksgiving. This year’s effort aims to reach individuals and families facing food insecurity, offering not only sustenance but also a sense of community and connection during the holiday season. The organization relies entirely on volunteer support and donations to fulfill its mission.
“We bring in people, they prep all the food, debone turkeys, warm up all the sides, get all the pies sliced up and ready to go,” said operation Turkey’s Grogan.
Once packaged, an assembly line formed, allowing volunteers to efficiently distribute meals to drivers. “We have a line of folks that are going to actually walk these meals through so that everybody gets to be of service today. They’re going bring those meals out here, load them into the cars, and then off we go to deliver those meals to those who need them,” Grogan explained.
First-time volunteer Flora Marking expressed her excitement about participating in the delivery process. “Yeah, absolutely. We’re driving, what, 15 minutes south, and we’re going to drop them off, so that should be fun,” she told FOX 7 Austin.
Grogan emphasized the core purpose of the event. “Today, for me, is about being of service to others,” he said. ”As you can see,it takes a village and there’s a lot of people that put their thumbprint on this.” He shared a especially rewarding experience, noting, “On the drive home you see someone sitting on the sidewalk eating one of those meals, that makes it all worthwhile.”
