Hong Kong Horse Racing to Observe Silence, Donate Millions After Deadly Fire
SHA TIN, HONG KONG – A scheduled horse racing meeting at Sha Tin Racecourse will proceed on November 30, but will be marked by a minute’s silence and jockeys wearing black armbands as a sign of respect following a devastating fire in Tai po. The blaze, which erupted on November 26, has claimed at least 94 lives, wiht scores more missing, making it Hong Kong’s deadliest fire as 1948.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) announced that all gross income from the race meeting – estimated at HK$70 million (S$12 million) – will be donated to those affected by the tragedy at Wang Fuk Court.
“The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) is deeply saddened by the loss of so many lives during the tragic fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, as well as the injuries and personal loss suffered by many others,” the HKJC said in a statement released on November 27.
Several othre domestic sporting events in Hong kong,including a trail race and rugby matches,have been postponed or are expected to be,according to the South China Morning Post.
