AAA Game Progress Faces Increasing Risk,Says Industry Veteran
Oslo,Norway – Marie Mejerwall,a veteran of Capcom and warner Bros. who previously worked on a cancelled Dead Rising 5 project, has spoken about the growing financial risks associated with AAA game development. In a recent interview, Mejerwall stated that production budgets have “grown and grown” to a point where the risk is “too high” for manny companies to sustain.
Mejerwall pointed to Ubisoft’s recent move to place some of its intellectual property into a partnership entity as an example of this increasing risk aversion. She believes the industry is shifting towards solutions like co-development teams and publishers being more willing to hand over IP to other studios.
“Whoever owns the IP doesn’t want to hire a bunch of people,” Mejerwall explained. ”You almost see three games and three IPs keep a big studio afloat…you can give the [IP] to a co-developer instead, and then they can make something good with it.”
however, Mejerwall also highlighted the potential of new technologies, notably artificial intelligence, to mitigate these risks. She noted AI is already impacting fields like programming and animation, allowing smaller teams to achieve more.
“With the revolution in tools and AI…we can create more with smaller teams than we had before,” she said.
