KP Brno Team left in the Dark during FIBA European Cup Match
BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC – A FIBA European Cup womenS basketball game between KP Brno and sassari was abruptly halted with 3.5 minutes remaining, leaving the Brno players stranded in a darkened and unheated arena, according to team manager Jaroslav Michálek. At the time of the stoppage, Brno held a narrow 69-67 lead.
The unusual circumstances stem from a technical issue causing a power outage in the hall. Michálek reported to Brno daily that after the incident, “They left us here in the dark on the board, everyone else is already gone. The home team, the referee, everyone.we are the only ones in the hall, it’s dark and cold.” The situation has escalated into a dispute over the game’s completion, with meaningful implications for KP Brno’s advancement in the tournament.
Sassari representatives reportedly suggested finishing the game in an alternate venue, a proposal Brno declined, along with a suggestion to resume play on Friday. Michálek stated that guidance from the Czech basketball federation was to insist on terminating the match, while Sassari is pushing for its continuation, creating a current impasse.
The game’s outcome is crucial as the top two teams from each group, plus the four best third-place finishers, qualify for the next stage of the European Cup.Elsewhere, in a separate European Cup contest, Chomutovsko faced challenges in Lithuania while missing key player Kateřina Bartoňová, recovering from hand surgery. Kateřina Rokošová lead Chomutovsko with 15 points and 6 rebounds, supported by monika Fučíková and Eliška brejchová, each contributing 13 points.
