Seoul‘s Outdoor Libraries See Record 3 Million Visitors in 2024
Seoul’s innovative network of outdoor libraries drew a record 3 million readers throughout 2024, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced Wednesday. The initiative, which features both large central locations and smaller “pop-up” installations, has quickly become a popular cultural and recreational destination for both residents and international visitors.
The success of Seoul’s outdoor libraries underscores a growing global trend toward accessible public spaces and community-focused learning. By removing the traditional barriers of library walls, the program encourages reading and cultural exchange in a relaxed, open-air habitat. The initiative aims to continue expanding its reach, with plans to reopen in spring 2025 and further integrate cultural programming.
The libraries operate in two seasonal sessions, running from April 23 to late June and September 5 to November 2.They close during the summer months due to heat and monsoon weather. This year, outdoor libraries were established in 14 districts beyond the central hubs, including Gangseo,Gwangjin, and Seongbuk.
In addition to the main locations, 108 smaller ”pop-up” libraries were deployed in schools and municipal facilities, utilizing kits containing books and camping chairs to recreate the outdoor reading experience within local communities.
The program also fostered cultural exchange through partnerships with embassies and cultural centers from 10 countries, including Britain, Ireland, Peru, and India. The Indian Embassy offered yoga sessions, while the Irish Embassy hosted lectures, including a writing class led by author Sinead Moriarty.
