cuban Customs Thwarts two International Drug Smuggling Attempts
Cuban Customs officials recently announced the triumphant disruption of two international drug trafficking operations at José Martí International Airport. According to Wiliam Pérez González, First Vice Chief of the General Customs of the Republic, authorities seized two kilograms of methamphetamine cleverly concealed within six baseball bats.
The operation, a collaborative effort with the Specialized Anti-Drug Confrontation Body under the national “Against Drugs You Win” initiative, involved four passengers.
Beyond the airport seizures, Cuban Customs is actively strengthening its defenses against drug trafficking. A preventative meeting was held at the Port of Havana Customs, bringing together representatives from the Attorney General’s Office and the Anti-Drug Body. Led by Pérez González and Colonel Héctor González Hernández, second in command of the Anti-Drug Body, the meeting focused on recognizing successful detection efforts, discussing the challenges of combating drug trafficking, and reviewing current legal frameworks.
Pérez González emphasized the importance of continuous training for border security personnel and maintaining a high level of vigilance, particularly amongst younger customs officers. Colonel González Hernández reaffirmed the unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance policy regarding drug trafficking and expressed gratitude for the dedication of those working to protect Cuban society.
These efforts extend beyond the airport and port, encompassing ongoing activities at the mercantile Control Customs Office and the National Customs Training School, all contributing to a thorough national strategy for drug prevention and enforcement. Cuba views a firm stance against drug trafficking as a cornerstone of its national security, achieved through strong inter-agency cooperation.
