Västernorrland County Prepares for Potential Intense Flu Season,Opens Vaccination Bookings
Residents of Västernorrland County are urged to prepare for a potentially severe flu season as cases are expected to rise in the coming weeks. Vaccination against influenza is now available to those in risk groups, with bookings opening December 1st for all residents over 18. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the impact of the flu, particularly on vulnerable populations, and comes as the region anticipates a challenging winter for respiratory illnesses.
The annual flu season poses a critically important health risk, especially for individuals with underlying health conditions and the elderly. This year, health officials are particularly concerned about a potentially intense season, prompting the early rollout of vaccinations. While current reported flu cases in Västernorrland remain low, preventative measures are crucial. Vaccinations are free for recommended groups, and available at cost for all others.
“Vaccination is the best way to get protection against severe disease,” stated Maria Tempé, infectious disease doctor in Region Västernorrland. “We are preparing for what could be a tough flu season this year. My advice is if you belong to a risk group or are 65 or older, take action and get vaccinated quickly.”
Currently, 55 percent of residents aged 65 and older have received their flu vaccination, and 67 percent of those 75 and older are vaccinated against COVID-19. Officials are specifically encouraging individuals receiving home care services to book appointments, recognizing the increased benefit and challenges in reaching this group.
“We see that it is tough to reach people who have home care with the offer of vaccination, at the same time that vaccination against covid-19 and influenza is of great benefit to this group,” explained Malin Plantin Sjöblom, director of operations for Vaccination and sampling in Region Västernorrland. “Therefore, we would like to address a special request to you who have home care to book an appointment for vaccination.”
Vaccination appointments can be booked online at 1177.se or by calling 0611-804 00 (phone hours 08.00-16.00, closed for lunch 12-13.00).
