West Alabama Storms: Timeline, Risk Levels & Weather Update

Tuscaloosa, AL – Severe thunderstorms are expected to‌ move across West Alabama this afternoon adn evening, bringing the potential for tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds. A Tornado Watch is in effect for several counties,⁢ including Tuscaloosa, ⁣untill 7 PM.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham warns⁣ that conditions⁣ are favorable for the development ‍of supercell thunderstorms, which can produce tornadoes. Residents shoudl be prepared to take shelter if ⁣a warning is issued for their‌ area. The primary threat window is between 3 PM and 7 PM, but conditions could remain unsettled through the evening.

This system is impacting a broad area of the Southeast, wiht West Alabama particularly vulnerable due to a combination of ‌atmospheric instability and sufficient wind shear. ‌The Storm Prediction Center has placed the region under a Level 3 of 5 risk for severe ⁣thunderstorms, indicating a meaningful threat. Large hail up ​to the size of golf balls and wind gusts exceeding 60 mph are ‍possible. ⁤
