Texas fires Women’s Soccer Coach Ange Kelly
AUSTIN (KXAN) – Chris Del Conte, the athletic director for the University of Texas, announced Monday the firing of Longhorns women’s soccer coach Ange Kelly after 14 seasons leading the program.
The decision comes following a challenging 2023 season where the Longhorns finished with a 4-12-1 overall record and a 2-8-0 mark in Southeastern Conference play. This marked the third losing season for Texas under Kelly’s leadership, following accomplished years including a SEC tournament championship and NCAA tournament bid in 2022.
During her tenure,Kelly amassed a record of 161-90-35 and guided the Longhorns to eight NCAA Tournament appearances, reaching the Sweet 16 twice. Prior to this season, Kelly led the team to three consecutive conference championships - two Big 12 titles and the 2022 SEC tournament title.
Del Conte stated that Kelly “led this program in a first-class manner and has poured tremendous energy and dedication into our student-athletes and staff over the past 14 seasons.” He added, “After the season, we took time to reflect on this year, the future of Texas Soccer and where the program is headed. Following thoughtful discussion, we think it is in the best interest of The University of Texas to move in a new direction.”
Kelly expressed gratitude for her time at Texas, saying, “I want to extend my deepest thankfulness to our staff and all of the student-athletes who have represented the burnt orange.I will always cherish the relationships that have been made and will forever hold them close to my heart.”
The University has not yet announced plans for an interim or permanent replacement.
