Rangers Acquire Brandon Nimmo,Mets Land Marcus Semien in Trade

ARLINGTON,Texas – ⁣The Texas rangers and New York Mets completed⁤ a significant‌ trade on Wednesday, sending outfielder Brandon Nimmo ⁢to Texas and infielder‍ Marcus Semien to New York. The ‌move signals a shift in strategy for both teams as they⁤ prepare for the upcoming season.

The rangers, coming off a World Series victory in 2023, began the offseason seeking financial versatility. While taking‌ on a longer-term commitment with nimmo, who‌ is ⁣owed $101.25 ⁣million over the next five seasons, the annual financial impact‌ is less than that of Semien, who is expected to earn $72 million over the next three seasons.Texas had several players projected to earn over $25 million next year, including Semien,⁤ Corey Seager, Jacob deGrom, and Nathan Eovaldi.

Semien, a⁢ three-time All-Star, joined the Rangers in 2022 and played a key ⁣role in their championship run. In four seasons with Texas,he batted .249 with 93 home runs and 319⁣ RBIs. ‍He won his second Gold Glove this year. Semien, 35,⁣ finished the 2023 season on⁤ the injured list after being hit on the foot on August 20, marking only the ⁢second time in his 13‍ major ‌league seasons he required a disabled list stint. prior⁣ to the injury,he⁣ had appeared in all but six of the Rangers’ 615 games sence joining the team. In 127 games this⁢ year, he hit .230 with 15 home runs and 62 ⁤RBIs. over his 1,629 career games with the Chicago⁢ White Sox,⁢ Oakland Athletics, Toronto blue Jays, ⁤and Rangers, Semien has a .253 batting average with⁤ 253 ⁣home runs and 801 ‌RBIs.

Nimmo, 30, ⁢provides the Rangers with a proven offensive ‌presence. He batted .262 ‍with a⁣ career-high 25 home runs‍ and 92 rbis in 155 games for ⁢the mets in 2023. He has a career .364 on-base ⁤percentage and has consistently reached base, scoring at least ‍81 runs in each of the last three ‌seasons, including a‌ career-best 102 in 2022. In 1,066 career games, Nimmo has 135 home runs and⁤ 463 RBIs.

The trade is viewed as the first⁤ major move in what is ⁣expected to be an active offseason for ⁢both organizations, particularly for the ‍Mets, who missed the ⁤postseason in 2023 and underwent changes to‌ their coaching⁢ staff. New York president of baseball operations David Stearns identified improving run prevention as a key priority⁣ this winter, and acquiring Semien aligns ⁤with that goal.
