Xbox Price Hike: RAM Shortages Could Lead to Higher Console Costs

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Microsoft may soon increase the price of Xbox Series consoles due to ongoing global RAM shortages, according to reports. This ⁣potential price hike would follow two increases‍ already implemented this year – one in May and another for US⁣ customers in September.

The details comes from Moore’s Law is Dead, a source known for hardware leaks, who claims ‌Microsoft has warned ⁢partners that rising RAM costs and limited supply-driven by demand from AI⁢ data centers-could force a price increase or ‌even lead to consoles becoming unavailable. “If ⁢you still want an Xbox for some reason at their current pricing, those prices could go ‌up soon, or supply could just entirely dry up,” Moore’s Law is Dead stated.

The leaker suggests sony proactively secured a large supply of RAM at lower prices, possibly shielding the PlayStation 5 from immediate ⁢price ‍increases. “From‌ what I’ve heard, Sony planned ahead, bought up gobs of RAM⁣ near the ‍bottom‌ of the pricing, and thus they should be fine for months,” they added, noting Sony’s ability to⁤ offer⁤ Black Friday discounts ⁣supports this claim.

This potential price adjustment arrives alongside⁣ recent increases to Xbox Game Pass subscription costs. Game Pass Ultimate now costs $29.99 / £22.99 per month and includes access to over 75 ⁢day-one releases annually, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics, alongside improvements to cloud gaming and a new Rewards program.
